Australia in a Nutshell
An island so much larger than itself, Australia goes way beyond the stereotypes of kangaroos and sun-kissed beaches. In fact, it’s hard to imagine that such a vibrant country, nestled between the Indian and Pacific oceans, was a penal colony just a couple of hundred years ago. Australia surely is Sydney and Melbourne, but it’s also about its fascinating Aboriginal culture, endless coastal drives and pulsating biodiversity.
The Big 3: Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane
These are the three most populous cities in Australia and together account for more than 50% of the country’s entire population (around 24 million souls in 2018). That being said, any visit to Australia should reflect this reality and spending a considerable amount of time in some of Australia’s fascinating cities is mandatory.
Sydney is Australia’s most famous postcard and the ideal place to spend a few days visiting its many attractions and enjoying the welcoming vibe. A 10-hour drive to the north is Queensland’s capital Brisbane (not really far by Australian standards) and to the southwest is cosmopolitan Melbourne, which is slightly closer.
In case of time shortage not being an issue, visiting other Australian cities like Perth, Adelaide, Cairns and Hobart might prove to be a good idea.
Nature Sets the Tone Here
Australia is a country of contrasts and nothing better represents that idea than comparing two of Australia’s most known attractions: Uluru (Ayers Rock, the colossal red rock formation in The Northern Territory) and The Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest marine life sanctuary. In the first, conditions can be extreme and only a few species can adapt to such a harsh environment, while in the second life flourishes by the second.
The “land down under” is also home to incredible natural parks and visiting at least a few should be one your list. Parks spread out across all corners of this enthralling nation.
A Land of Adventure
Visiting Australia can easily become the adventure of a lifetime. From crossing this continental country by train to taking on the challenge of driving across the endless outback, diving in its spectacular reefs or climbing Sydney’s Harbour Bridge, one thing is guaranteed: you’ll never be bored in Australia.
